Week 4: All I Do Is Win

Bible Reading...
1 Samuel 17:45-50   |   John 16:31-33

There is a song that became popular when I was in college called "All I Do Is Win".  It's not a great song, but everyone loves to feel like a winner.  When you're a winner, you feel unstoppable!  You feel like you can do anything!  What if I told you that winning wasn't really about what YOU can do... it was about what GOD has already done?

You've probably heard the story of David and Goliath.  What if I told you that story was NOT about David defeating a giant?  REALY?!  Yes, really.  Before going into battle, David says, "...for the battle is the Lord's.  He will hand you over to us."  David knew it wasn't about what he could do; it was about what God was doing through him.  God defeated the giant that day.  Jesus tells us that it even goes further than what He "will do"... it's what He's already done.  The best part about a life with Jesus is that Jesus already wins.  He won when He died on the cross for our sins and defeated Satan forever.  When we walk with Christ, we are walking with a winner.  That means that when we say, "I want to follow Jesus", all we do is win, win, win.  But remember, we don't win because of what we did; we win because of what Jesus Christ has done.

Memorize and Internalize

"[...] it is not by sword or by spear that the Lord saves, for the battle is the Lord's. [...]."
(1 Samuel 17:47b)

"[...] Be courageous! I have conquered the world."
(John 16:33b)

Engage

Let's get engaged with this week's lesson.  Are you good at basketball?  Maybe some of you, but I'm not.  I can get the ball in the general area of the basket, but actually making a goal is kind of hard.  What if you had a helper to tip the ball in?  This week we're going to set up a "goal" around different parts of the house.  Your objective is to make 10 baskets, but you're going to have mom, dad, or a sibling help you "tip" the shots in.  Notice how much easier it is when you have someone else winning the victory for you!

Get Your Setup Ready

Find a basketball hoop and ball, or fashion one out of a hula-hoop, wastebasket, or bucket.  Make sure it is something you can place in different parts of your house throughout the week.  If you don't have a suitable ball or worry about it causing a mess, you can use balled up pieces of paper instead.

New Day, New Goal

Each day place the hoop somewhere in or around your home.  Get creative!  You can make a part of the game "finding the hoop".  Once it's found have the kids take some practice shots just to make sure it's not TOO easy.

Let's Go For Five

Have the child stand at a distance with an adult standing near the goal.  As the child shoots, do your part to make sure the ball goes in.  This can either be you "tipping" the ball in, catching and dunking it, or whatever else will make the game more entertaining.  Was five too easy?  Go for 10 or see how far away you can make the shots together!

Meditate Through Prayer

Complete your activity by thanking God for winning your battles before you even fight them.  Thank Him for being by your side even when things get scary and uncertain.  Pray for the courage to stand tall when life gets hard so that others can look at you and see that you have Jesus in your heart!
